18703 Three Rivers Road Covington, , LA , 70433-8915 United StatesOriginally opened in November 1964 as the Delta Regional Primate Research Center, the Tulane National Primate Research Center is one of eight centers that make up the National Primate Research Center Program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Alexius House The Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) is situated on 500 acres of land purchased from the Alexius family in 1962. The property represented a significant portion of land that is still known as Alexiusville. The Alexius House, named after Guido Centio Alexius, dates back to the early 1800’s. The House was home to several generations of the Alexius family and is the only original building that remains on the property that houses the TNPRC. The Tulane University School of Architecture is currently doing a preservation study of the House, and the long-term plan is to restore it and use it as a visitors’ center or other appropriate way to support the TNPRC. Community Focus Group On April 1, 2004, the Director, Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) created a permanent Community Focus Group (CFG) to establish better communication with the local community in Saint Tammany Parish, Louisiana, in relation to the activities of the TNPRC. Read More... Diseases We Investigate The primary areas of research today at the TNPRC are infectious diseases, including biodefense-related work and Regenerative Medicine. Research at the Tulane National Primate Research Center is focused on human health problems that require the use of nonhuman primates to understand the disease. This forms the basis of efforts to develop diagnostics, therapeutics and preventive strategies such as vaccines. The Northshore Community Established in 1964, the Tulane National Primate Research Center has continually expanded its facilities, increased faculty and staff, and experienced steady growth in its research programs. It has become a premier infectious disease research facility. The Center is one of the largest employers in St. Tammany Parish, the fastest growing parish in the State of Louisiana, USA.
