The company was co-founded by Dr. Chao Li and Dr. Kevin Pawlik, who collaborated for over a decade at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to advance gene therapies for genetic diseases such as Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Dr. Chao Li worked with Dr. Tim Townes at UAB to develop a CRISPR-based gene correction therapy for SCD, which advanced to the pre-IND stage and underwent an INTERACT meeting with the FDA. He also developed prime editing-based gene therapies for both SCD and CF. Dr. Li has extensive experience in applying gene-editing technologies to various fields, including cancer research, skin disease research, and disease modeling, for both mechanistic studies and therapeutic development. Dr. Kevin Pawlik, an expert in disease modeling, served as an Associate Professor at UAB before co-founding PEBsci. He contributed to the development of "Townes' mice," the most widely recognized humanized SCD mouse models in the world. By utilizing CRISPR gene editing, he engineered iPSCs as a resource for universal donor cell therapy and designed the world’s first humanized porcine SCD animal model in collaboration with Exemplar Genetics. Together, Dr. Li and Dr. Pawlik bring decades of expertise in gene editing, disease modeling, and gene therapy development to PEBsci, positioning the company as a leader in advancing solutions for genetic diseases and beyond.

If your CRO isn’t showing up on the map, then please be sure your company profile is up to date in Scientist.com’s Backoffice. After logging in, click the Your Company button in the navigation at the top, and then select the Locations tab.
