It soon bought a nearby dairy farm and also started to produce local delicacies for export to countries like the Philippines as well as for the domestic market. In 1913 Amoy Canning hired an American named Kroch to come to Xiamen to set up a canning factory and help with transfer of technology. The company expanded from Amoy until it had a number of factories in China. After Amoy Canning merged with its rival Ta Tong, a branch was set up in Hong Kong, followed by a factory in 1929. In 1938, its head office was moved to Hong Kong because of the war in China. During the Second World War, most soya sauce factories ran out of raw materials and so competitors had no stock to sell. Amoy Canning, however, had enough sauce to sell and so managed to capture the market in Hong Kong. The Japanese fed Amoy Canning beaned pork products to British prisoners of war, an ex-POW Englishman was so grateful for the Amoy Canning beaned pork that kept him alive that he resolved to return the favour. Raw materials were in short supply after the war and it was this man who helped procure the soybeans and tin plates - excess inventory left behind by the Japanese - that were needed for production. As part of the war relief effort, Amoy Canning donated canned food to Britain and got favorable feedback by way of letters and enquiries. Amoy Canning found an agent there and a new export market was born. Amoy Canning first set up a factory in Singapore in 1951 and moved to a new factory in 1994. The new factory in Jurong, Singapore, is streamlined for high capacity production and equipped with modern food processing and packing machinery. Espousing change while ensuring continuity, Amoy Canning's philosophy is to continue and preserve its long and rich history of quality and experience, while advancing with new products to fulfill its honored heritage of producing the highest quality of Asian food for the world. Ng Teng Guan, the visionary founder of Amoy Canning, was active in the community. A firm believer in education, he is credited with building a number of schools in Fujian, China, along with numerous other contributions.
