The CIU has extensive experience in the design and conduct of clinical and pharmacokinetic studies in all phases of drug development from Phase I to Phase IV, including bioequivalence studies, drug-drug and drug-food interaction studies. The CIU can also provide private accommodations for short-term or prolonged overnight stays with experienced research nurses and physicians available to provide 24-hour monitoring of study participants. The CIU also operates an on-site laboratory for handling, pre-analytical processing, storage and shipment of specimens for any sample processing needs. The CIU operates according to Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which are maintained and updated on a regular basis. Guidelines for sample submission LANSET occupies one entire floor of CAREG (14 rooms), has a state-of-the-art extraction laboratory, consisting of an ultra-trace clean lab with controlled atmosphere, a state-of-the-art analytical facility which includes a wide range of mass spectrometers, including Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, triple-MS, and Time-of-Flight accurate mass capabilities. These instruments are used mainly to identify natural products and environmental contaminants in plants and environmental samples. The LANSET facility is accredited for mercury analysis by the Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories, and specializes in radiometric analysis of natural isotopes including lead-210 and radium-226 for dating sediment and peat cores for use in paleoenvironmental reconstructions. It is operated by a team of 4 Technical Officers who are committed to providing quality technical assistance to faculty members and research personnel. Most laboratories do not own the type of equipment that constitute the basic framework of the Core Facility, therefore, operating and maintaining a Common Equipment Core with 'shared' equipment that is in a state of operational readiness and peak performance is essential to the efficiency and success of every principal investigator and his/her laboratory members. This allows for the precise modeling of many human disorders as well as the generation of exquisite biological models for any number of research objectives. Transgenic and ES cell-based murine models are de rigor in many areas of the biological sciences, and ready access this technology is essential to a robust and competitive research program. The Transgenic Mouse Core Facility strives to provide open access services to support these methodologies, with a mandate is to deliver transgenic and ES cell based mouse models for the University of Ottawa and associated research institutes. The Laboratory is located in D’Iorio Hall of the Faculty of Science and comprises 15 rooms over an approximate area of 500 m². It has its own water treatment facility for dechloramination, sterilization, ionic strength and temperature adjustments. The objectives of the Laboratory are to provide state-of-the-art core facilities for: 1. The breeding and maintenance of healthy aquatic organisms. 2. Laboratory space for in vivo physiological and genetic experimentation. 3. Training and support for all users. The facility is primarily used by members of the Faculty of Science, University of Ottawa, and serves over 100 students, research trainees and scientists. Users of the Laboratory for Physiology and Genetics of Aquatic Organisms perform cutting edge experiments in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, comparative physiology, developmental biology, endocrinology, neurobiology and behaviour, and genetics.
