For Sanger sequencing, we have the 3130 Genetic Analyzer from Applied Biosystems, which delivers quality data of over 700 bases. The six color capability of the 3130 (with one color reserved for the size standard)allows for greater flexibility and cost-effectiveness in multiplexing samples for microsatellites, tRFLP or other fragment analysis methods. To determine the quality of RNA and DNA samples, we use the Agilent Bioanalyzer. The Bioanalyzer is sensitive enough to detect pico amounts of RNA, and the RIN (RNA Integrity Number), developed by Agilent, is the gold standard for RNA quality. Our newest service is next-gen sequencing, using the Ion Proton from Applied Biosystems. It is located on the third floor of the Howell Science Building in room N302. It is a recently renovated laboratory that serves as a teaching as well as research facility. The facility is used to train both undergraduate and graduate students. We are offering a graduate cell biology class every fall. In addition, we are teaching undergraduate workshops during the summer. These workshops are 2 weeks long and provide undergraduate students with necessary skills to work in a cell culture lab. The workshops are offered twice each summer. The facility contains enough equipment to accommodate up to eight students at a time. We have four biological safety cabinets, two CO2 incubators, two bench top centrifuges, a plate reader and plate washer, two inverted microscopes, and a compound microscope. Additionally, the facility also acts as a repository for cell line storage through the use of three cryo-storage units, which are available to all biology faculty members and their students.

The facility has two bench top flow analyzers: LSR II 4-laser 11-color flow cytometer and FACScan one laser 3-color cytometer (both Becton Dickinson). Confocal microscopy is used primarily for cellular co-localization studies and three-dimensional reconstruction. About one-fifth of the space in the BRF (level one) is devoted to the Department of Entomology within CALS. Departments with research interests here are mostly within COS Biological Sciences. The BRF accommodates the research and teaching needs of about 20 faculty members at NC State, and works cooperatively with researchers from private industry and other governmental agencies. The BRF allows the research endeavors of the COS faculty to be centralized. Centralization permits increased opportunities for collaboration among faculty members of different departments. It also prevents redundancy of research efforts and equipment, hence allowing devotion of resources to research. The BRF fulfills a valuable need in COS, providing a site for the humane care of research animals. The facility was designed to house laboratory animals under conditions required by local and federal regulatory agencies.
